7 Key Steps for Starting an E-commerce Business in Nigeria

To start this post, it is more helpful to actually understand what e-commerce is. E-commerce is the short form of the word “electronic commerce “. Using these two words ” electronic and commerce” separately, you can deduce what electronic commerce should be.

e-commerce is simply a term used when transactions, or other commercial activities are done electronically or online.

In Nigeria, there are various platforms where you can use e-commerce such as Jumia, Konga, Shopify and so on.

Having known what e-commerce is let’s go to what this post is all about.

One unique thing about all e-commerce businesses in Nigeria is that they all have a website because obviously from the name “electronic “, it means something beyond manual.

The first key is

THINKING ABOUT HAVING AN E-COMMERCE WEBSITE

As earlier stated, e-commerce platforms are those beyond the manual.

Manual in the sense that all the goods are stocked pilled in a store or shop and people come there to buy.

In the case of an e-commerce platform, the goods or services are displayed on the website for potential customers to come and patronize.

You need to have a graphic picture of how you intend on making the website look like for example, where the goods will be located, their categories, their price ranges and so on.

The second key is

GETTING A DOMAIN NAME

A domain name is compulsory to get for you to even have a website.

Once you have thought about how you want the website to look like, you can then start setting up your website by either building it by employing the services of website developers or simply using other platforms like WordPress.

There are different platforms to get a domain name from as it regards WordPress. Such platforms include; Namecheap, Godaddy and many more.

The third key is

ACQUISITION OF GADGETS, ACCESSORIES

This area entails the purchase of necessary gadgets like the desktop and so on and accessories like software purchase, billing platform, customer support and so on.

The fourth key is

HOSTING

This from a literal sense typically means accommodating something or someone.

In this context, hosting is simply put as where a website will live.

Because you are running an e-commerce site, it’s the more reason why you shouldn’t use a free hosting service due to some of the uptimes, bandwidth issues and so on that might be experienced.

 

The fifth key is

WEBSITE SECURITY

As an e-commerce business, you are seemingly a high value target in terms of your website or business being hacked because you deal with money.

Most of the top ranked e-commerce websites in the world are very big. Since the website is big therefore a weak security system can be easily penetrated and can eventually be brought down sometimes just by a virus being introduced to the system by hackers.

Every website has a username and a password.  When choosing your password, ensure to always use a very strong type that you obviously know so you can stay free from hackers.

The sixth key is

PROPER MARKET RESEARCH

This is kind one of the foremost thing to do . It’s like a feasibility study done to know what works for the business and what doesn’t.

This process can set a lot of things right in a business from the start because you will already know your target market are, your competitors,  potential partners and investors.

You’ll also know how your customers behave to an extent so as to device means of satisfying them to an extent.

The seventh key is

TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS.

This is the final stage of the start of the business because your product has been finalized. There are several means of promoting your business for example, influencer marketing, social media marketing and advertising through blogs and so on.
